Review
The promo warns us to get ready for a spine-chilling Halloween with the new 7 inch from the Jukeez. promising two haunting tracks. Well, I don’t know about that, I often find horror-themed RnR more funny than scary, but entertaining none the less. The 50s & 60s were the perfect time for Halloween records, given the amount of low-budget b-movies about monsters, outer space, & all other things horror. This trash culture proved very influential, especially in bands like The Crammps. Therefore, Halloween themed tracks are perfect for artists influenced by the above decades, as the Jukeez seem to be. According to the press kit, the band consists of Julie (vocals-guitar) Ollie (base) & Simon (drums) They promise us frightfully-loud beats & early saxophone solos. Let’s see if they deliver, I’ll follow their instructions & crank the volume up & hopefully prepare for spooky vibes.
Track by track
Transylvania Twist.
not being much of a dancer, well ok not a dancer at all, I’ve no idea if f you can twist to this or not. Anyway, what we have is a fun Garage track about that guy with a cape that lives in Transylvania & gets his kicks out of sucking blood, we’ve all been there right. Julie gives us tough vocals perfect for Garage. It’s a fun track with fun lyrics. It should appeal to people into Nuggets-style Garage, fans of the Girl in The Garage & Girls With Guitar CD series’, as well as Punk & Indie music lovers. What I love is that it’s all over in 1:45, the perfect length for a slab of novelty RnR. I wonder if they got their influence from this track to the line in Bobby Boris Pickett’s Monster Mash, where Dracula, clearly enraged, asks ‘Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist’.
Boogieman;
This one gives us more value for money, though not much more, clocking in at 2:07. Another tale about a favourite creature of the horror genre, the Boogieman. Julie again gives us a great vocal, going from tough to sexy effortlessly. This song delivers on their promise of sax, love the sax on this one. Again, it’s a really fun track that deserves repeated listening. Again, it should appeal to many people. Keeping it short & sweet, they’ve really embraced the 7inch format.
Summary.
I really enjoyed this double-slice of horror-fuelled Garage. They selected an A & B side, but I feel this should be a double A, as both tracks are equally fun & thrilling. At under 4mins in total, they get their point across very quickly & leave us wanting more. 7inch collectors & music lovers with a record player should get this. Heck even if you don’t have a record player, get it anyway as it’s darn good. look forward to seeing what Julie, Ollie & Simon offer us next. Fab.
