Fatboy are back, it’s official. The ever-popular Swedish band return with a new track, Ghost On My Back. On this recording, the band consists of Thomas Pareigis (vocals, acoustic guitar) Hannu Kiviaho (guitar, melatron) Thomas Schuldt (upright base) Johan Svensson (drums) & Jan Lissnils (steel guitar.) Fatboy have always enjoyed stretching the boundaries on the rockin’ scene, not too often I get to list a mellotron in my reviews for STB. They blend Country, Rock N Roll & Rockabilly. They also love to tell a story with their lyrics.
Instantly this new track makes me think of Johnny Cash. Not the classic Sun years, but the post-apocalyptic darkness of some of the American Recordings he made late in life. I also get a strong Spaghetti Western vibe with this Country track with a Rockabilly beat. I love the base-playing. Dare I say it, the vocals also remind me, just a bit, of 00s era Indie Rock, which is no bad thing. The mellotron gives parts of the track a more spacey vibe that you’d normally expect in a rock anthem or dare I say it Progressive Rock song. Again, this works really well. Many of us will be able to realte to the lyrics I’m sure, as we’ve all at some point had a ghost on our backs we just cannot shake, or maybe that’s just me. Either way, I really enjoyed their latest offering.
The press release lists a number of influences, Roy Orbison, Elvis, Farren Young, Johnny Cash, to artists like The Smiths, Cramps & Tom Waites. All their influences melt together here in this dark but bouncy track. Looking forward to checking out more of them this year. Fatboy are back, it’s official.
