Anywhere, Anytime

Dave B

Released date and year September 2024

Record Label Humbug Records Ltd.

Reviewed date July 2024

Dave B has been on the UK rock and roll scene for some years. This four track EP is a trans-Atlantic collaboration with Rodney Lawson, Chris Carpenter and John Mattick who wrote two of the tracks and play all the instruments. They recorded their work in Nashville at Crew 22 Music Studios while Dave added his vocals in the Doghouse House Studios, Essex. The two original songs will be on Dave’s forthcoming album that he will start working on in the States next year. The other two tracks come from Dave’s last album, “Addicted to Rock n Roll”. Honouring his 2 heroes; Ricky Nelson and Johnny Cash.

Members of the Band, Dave B, Rodney Lawson, Chris Carpenter and John Mattick.

Track by track Review

Anywhere, Anytime – A nice up-tempo country rocker with a bit of a Dave Edmunds feel to it. Not quite rockabilly, but a danceable track that rolls along nicely.

I Will Follow You – In 1962 Petula Clark first recorded this in French and then later in English. Possibly the best known version is by an American singer Litte Peggy March who had number 1 hit with it in 1963. Dave’s version is a cover of Ricky Nelson’s version and has all the feel of a recording made in the early 60s. His voice is smooth and controlled and the overall production is spot on.

The Rebel Johnny Yuma – Originally recorded by country legend, Johnny Cash as the theme song for an American TV Series “The Rebel”. This version is very faithful to the original version with Dave B handling the slightly tricky lyrics perfectly. The backing vocals and musicians also handle their parts with the same degree of proficiency.

Spanish Rose – Written by the same trio, Rodney Lawson, Chris Carpenter and John Mattick. who wrote “Anywhere, Anytime” this song does have that Mexican touch to it like some of the songs by Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash. If anything it is the influence of JC that shines through and again the production does have that 1960s sound.

Summary

This is an enjoyable sample of Dave’s past work and a glimpse of things to come. The attention to detail and the quality of the production are of the highest order.

Recommendation

I definitely recommend buying this EP and look forward to the new album in 2025.
